Phishing

One of the fastest-growing and most sophisticated online security threats is PHISHING, a method where account numbers, personal identification numbers, usernames, and passwords are collected from users and then used to compromise their online accounts and commit identity fraud.

Phishing emails are sent in attempt to give scammers access to your confidential information. Some phishing emails request you to send personal information back to the sender in an email reply. Many even include a link requesting you to visit an authentic-looking website posing as a financial institution such as Houston Federal Credit Union.

These fraudulent links, email addresses, and websites appear authentic. Attackers copy official logos and webpage layouts, send emails with subject lines such as "Urgent security notification", provide disguised links appearing identical to a legitimate website's address, and insert well-crafted messages such as this recent example:

    http://www.xxxxxxx.com

If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your ability to use your online account will be restricted. This instruction has been sent to xxxxxx@xxx.com and is obligatory to follow. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Please understand that this is a security measure meant to help protect you and your account.

    Thanks!

    Federal Credit Union Customer Service"

Remember: Houston Federal Credit Union will NEVER contact you via email to request or verify personal information. If you receive a phishing email that uses the Houston Federal Credit Union logo, name, or website, please forward the email to talktous@houstonfcu.org immediately.

To help protect your personal information:
  • Do not click on a link given in the text of an email, which can be redirected to a fraudulent website. Instead, type the website address directly into your browser.
  • Exercise caution when selecting your passwords and personal identification numbers, and when revealing account numbers, Social Security numbers and other personal information.
  • Never provide your personal data through an email solicitation unless you have initiated the contact.
  • Routinely update your computer's anti-virus protection and spyware protection programs.
If you suspect you could be the victim of phishing:
  • Report the suspected theft of your information to your card issuer, credit union, or other institution holding accounts that may be affected. It may be advisable to cancel or close your account and open a new one.
  • Review your account statements and billing statements monthly and immediately report any unusual activity.
  • Report the suspected theft of your information to the three major credit reporting agencies:
  • Contact your local police department to file a criminal report.
  • Contact the Social Security Administration's Fraud Hotline to report the unauthorized use of your personal identification information - find out more at www.ssa.gov.
